Chris Cross — the musician born Chris Allen, best known for being the founding bassist of British new wave legends Ultravox — has died. He was 71.
The musician passed away on March 25. The news was shared by Cross's former bandmate Midge Ure on Instagram.
"You were the glue that held the band together," Ure wrote. "You were the logic in the madness and the madness in our lives. It was great to know and grow with you. You are loved and missed old friend."
Forming in London in 1974, Ultravox initially performed under the name Tiger Lily. Cross, then performing as Chris St. John, was part of that initial lineup, and remained a fixture of the band's most well-known later configuration, which would eventually reunite in 2008 and release a new album, Brilliant, in 2012. The group achieved a number of Top 10 albums in the UK, as well as 17 hit singles — including "Dancing with Tears in My Eyes" and "Vienna," which the bassist co-wrote — between 1980 and 1986.
