Early last month, organizers for Montreal's MUTEK festival asked fans to vote for the dates that the 2011 edition would run. The world-class electronic music and culture festival, which normally runs during the first week of June, was being displaced by the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Fortunately, the racing event has rescheduled instead, so MUTEK fans can still enjoy their electronic excursion in early June.
Thanks to the Grand Prix being pushed back a week, MUTEK's 2011 edition will run from June 1 to 5. In a blog post, the fest's organizers explained, "We truly appreciate the volume of responses and the time taken to share your point of view with us in this matter. All of your comments were carefully weighed and considered in our deliberations, and despite the fact that we will be holding onto our customary dates next year we feel that your input has given us an update of the issues and realities that concern our public."
MUTEK has also just opened its submissions to acts interested in participating in the 2011 fest. The theme for the year will be "Festival as Lab." In a press release, organizeres explain, "The Festival as Lab theme explores festivals as experimental spaces or laboratories where we can explore and play with future art, music and ideas. We encourage submissions for projects that take the form of an experiment, a prototype or a trial of a new type of art object, technology or form of participation, and that make use of the setting of the festival in an inventive way."
The deadline for all MUTEK proposals is December 1. More information can be found here.
