Montreal's very own USA Out Of Vietnam had the honour of kicking off the eighth instalment of the Heavy Montreal festival on Saturday (August 6).  A shadowy, psychedelic, sludgy stoner outfit, each song was a winding road of an experience, the band taking their time to deliver the story.

With many of their songs clocking in at around 15 minutes, the trippy five-piece had to be strategic in filling their 30-minute set, so they carefully dropped two very powerful tracks. The band opened with the haunting "Tonight the Dead Walk" from their debut album Crashing Diseases and Incurable Airplanes, and followed it with a sneak peek from their upcoming new release, another gargantuan epic titled "Berlin is Broken."

Tendrils of marijuana smoke crept through the crowd, as many chose to start their festival experience by embracing the sonic trip that the band delivered. The five members had the monikers to match the music — Fogman, Son of Fogman, Rockhard and Sheenah Ko — and they all swayed while wailing on their instruments, each contributing to the eerie vocal landscape. Drummer and Seth Rogan clone Eric Cohen pounded the crap out of the drums behind them, carefully keeping each journey stitched together and on pace.
