If Berlin-via-Toronto techno musician Adam Marshall's New Kanada label could be looked at as the Canadian version of Kompakt Records, then its Ambient Parks series is its version of the long-running Pop Ambient series.
Ambient Parks has highlighted some of the country's (and the planet's) finest minimal techno, and with the release of volume three, New Kanada pulls together 15 artists that have yet to be featured through the first two volumes, giving many listeners a first look into the barely-there oscillations of Muon ("Rubber Tree"), the chewy, warped rhythms of Step Fiction ("Dorothy Lanwright") and the adventurous microhouse-leaning beats of Vancouver artist Nathan Jonson ("Take Me Away From This Place").
But leave it to some of Pop Ambient's return artists to truly redefine what minimal music can sound like in 2017; Crushfield delivers a rich, cascading synth flow with "Rarallax," while Hungary's Andras Toth lays down a stunning Philip Glass-esque piano investigation with "Mudang." Scouring the globe for such a fresh and idea-rich stable of artists to fill this 19-track compilation, New Kanada continues to have its ear to the ground, highlighting some of the brightest musicians dedicated to making the most unassuming splash possible.
