There’s only one word for the third in this series of new school dub and reggae: fuckingominal. Scouring the globe, Quango collects high-test material from Germany’s production wizards Boozoo Bajou, Denmark’s monarchs of lo-fi Junkyard Productions and California’s techno dubbers Djosos Krost, among others. Common threads that run through this compilation are a devotion to Jamaican and British dub pioneers and their ability to coax innovative sound textures out of primitive equipment. As well, there is a slightly unnerving attempt to mark new territory, with each musical measure ensuring that these tracks are all exciting examples of modern selector-ship. France’s Sevendub weigh in with the luscious and ethereal "Running Away,” which manages to convincingly bridge dub’s meditative element with house music’s chronic dance-ability. "Sister Let Him Go,” from Junkyard Productions, is a seven-minute tour de force of roots rhythms, sultry vocals, roughneck emceeing and muddy dubs. In an entirely different style, Djosos Krost’s "Cover Me” lays a sparkling electronic foundation for singer Lil Tasha to seduce her subject (and the listener) to. Dub Selector 3 is a good chance for vintage dub fans to see what the new scene, "an authentic global music,” is all about. They won’t be disappointed.
