The Velvet Underground's Moe Tucker at Right-wing Protest?

BY Alex HudsonPublished Oct 1, 2010

With their Andy Warhol collaborations and boundary-pushing rock'n'roll, the Velvet Underground have easily become true anti-establishment heroes. However, many of their fans are up in arms over the discovery of a video that apparently shows drummer Maureen Tucker at a right-wing political rally in the U.S.

The offending video comes from July, and was shot at a Tea Party protest opposing taxes. It was aired as part of WALB's coverage of the protest, and shows a woman named Maureen Tucker (identified as a "Tea Party supporter") telling the camera, "I'm furious about the way we're being led towards socialism, I'm furious about the incredible waste of money, when things that we really need and are important get dropped because there's no money left."

It's currently unconfirmed whether the woman interviewed at the Tea Party protest is the same Moe Tucker who banged the drums for the Velvet Underground all those years ago. But it's worth noting that the protest was filmed in Georgia; if you look at Tucker's PO box that's listed on her official website, you'll notice that she does indeed live in Georgia.

And then, of course, there's the small matter that the woman in the video looks exactly like her. Judge for yourself below. Go to YouTube to read the reactions of horrified VU fans in the comments
