The Walkmen

"Blue Turns to Grey" (Rolling Stones cover)

Diverting themselves momentarily from their fantastic new disc Heaven, indie rock greats the Walkmen are toasting the Rolling Stones' 50th anniversary via a cover of the 1965 Richards/Jagger piece "Blue Turns to Grey".

That gleefully sloppy piss take of some classic U2 material a few months back may have some wondering if the Walkmen will wreak havoc on the Stones number, but the band deliver a pleasant, if a bit too laid-back, take on the cut. There's a little less Mick Jagger-style swagger to vocalist Hamilton Leithauser's croon, adding an extra shade of sadness to those broken-hearted lyrics.

An acoustic guitar, meanwhile, sublimates the electric charge of the original, but it seems more in line with the Walkmen's current "relaxed" period.
