War of Ages

Based on the album cover art and armed with a hasty eye, it wouldn’t be inconceivable to accidentally pass Pennsylvania’s War of Ages off as just another death metal or grind outfit. Luckily, their latest album (which also happens to be a re-release) proves the band anything but and takes charge as an honourable contender in the realm of good ol’ hardcore. It’s difficult to pinpoint what makes Fire From The Tomb so appealing — there is nothing particularly unique about any of the 12 tracks and most the songs feature generic (but smooth) highs and lows, in-your-face strings and earthquake drum work. However, the album features some very clean-cut production, backed by obviously skilled musicians with a lot of heart. Standouts include "False Profit” and "Only The Strong Survive,” both of which explore an interesting and more melodic side before slipping back into War of Ages’ nearly perfected hardcore essence.
