The Red Hot Chili Peppers are no stranger to a lineup change — mostly to do with John Frusciante, who's now left and rejoined the band twice — but one of their more brief mix-ups was the one-album stint by Dave Navarro, who played guitar on 1995's One Hot Minute before dipping out. (One could even say he was there for about one hot minute.)
Navarro's split with the band was allegedly a little messy, and, until last night (December 20), he hadn't appeared on stage with Anthony Keidis since around 1997. But things change! Last night, Keidis appeared as a surprise guest at a charity concert for mental health advocacy group Above Ground put together by Navarro, and the two covered Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side."
The all-star concert, put on by Navarro and Billy Idol guitarist Billy Morrison, played tribute to both the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks and Lou Reed's Transformer. It was supposed to feature Billy Idol and the Foo Fighters' Taylor Hawkins, but both were forced to back out due to illness. Idol said that he's been tested for COVID and is suffering from a "respiratory cold."
In an Instagram post announcing that Idol and Hawkins would no longer be appearing, Navarro teased "a few surprises" to make up for their absences, one of which turned out to be Keidis.
See footage of their performance below, plus a post from Navarro about the reunion. You can also watch Slipknot's Corey Taylor cover Loud Reed's "I'm So Free," but only if you want to.
