We Are the City

"Happy New Year" (video)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Feb 24, 2011

Earlier this month, BC-based trio We Are the City announced the new EP High School, which was initially conceived as a side-project before the band decided to begin performing the new songs under their usual name. The album isn't out until March 22 via Adventure Boys Club, but the group have already released a video for the single "Happy New Year."

As you would expect, given that High School began as a separate band, the track doesn't sound much like the atmospheric prog-pop that helped them to win $150,000 in the Peak Performance Project in early 2010. Instead, it's a spiky pop rocker that's built around gritty guitar chords and fuzzy keyboard bass. The group perform the track in a bare cement room, lighting sparklers and smashing light bulbs with their faces obscured (much like on the album cover).

If you like the vid, then good news: this is the first of six planned videos (one for each track on High School).
