Aw, those Canadian indie rockers types are so nice. When Winnipeg's the Weakerthans heard the recent news about Regina power poppers the Library Voices losing all their gear - again - they knew they had to help out. So that's exactly what they're going to do.
First, a quick rundown on what happened to the Library Voices. On May 6, the band lost all their gear and a ton of personal possessions when nearly 600,000 gallons of water came through their practice space; the water is believed to be the result of a burst water main. Unfortunately, the insurance that the band had paid for is not being honoured, according to a press release. The Library Voices are determined to not have to cancel any shows because of this setback (they're tough and have been down this road before - last year they got their gear stolen in Vancouver while on tour).
So, to help out, the Weakerthans will be playing a show on May 25 at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern in support of their Canuck colleagues. Partial proceeds from the night will go to the Library Voices so they can help rebuild. Tickets are $25.
Toronto Weakerthans fans are extra excited as the band are also playing a show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on May 26. The band released their first live album, Live at the Burton Cummings Theatre, in March, and recently premiered the documentary We're the Weakerthans, We're From Winnipeg.
The Library Voices recently released Denim on Denim, their first long-player. The band have some Canadian dates lined up for June and July (check out the dates here). Here's hoping they can keep it together with a little help from their friends.
