Weaves

Toronto rockers Weaves may have performed as a four-piece, but all eyes were on lead singer Jasmyn Burke as she stumbled and twirled her way on the BLK BOX stage. Her likely inebriated antics involved lying down onstage, singing into a mic directly facing the side of the stage, and emitting spontaneous bursts of sound into the microphone. These mesmerising actions provided a bizarrely fitting accompaniment to the band's music, a brand of sparse, bluesy rock, and the band sounded like a grittier version of Alabama Shakes, with Burke pouring a bit of soul into every note. While the band is usually a two-piece consisting of Burke and instrumentalist Morgan Waters, the sound benefited from the fuller live roster. The three instrumentalists were tight, and the bassist's well-executed funky riffs helped drive the songs home, even though their efforts may have gone unnoticed by most. The bluesy tunes were catchy, with standouts including "Hulahoop" and "Sunshine Moon," and Burke's energy combined with the band's technical talent provided a winning combination.
