Webb Brothers

You'll most likely recognise the Webb Brothers by their dad, Jimmy, the famed songwriter who penned AM radio classics like "Wichita Lineman," "MacArthur Park" and "Up, Up and Away" during the '60s. As they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, seeing as Christian and Justin Webb have devoted themselves to the writing and performing of sophisticated pop music. In 2001, that would put you among the retro underground, with the likes of Apples In Stereo and the High Llamas, as opposed to at the top of the charts like their father. The high-end production by Smiths and Blur producer Stephen Street, along with heavily layered keyboards, works well at embellishing these well-crafted songs. My only concern is that the catchiest track, the joyous "Summer People," is written by bass player John San Juan - maybe these Webb boys just don't have their father's hooks.
