Danish art-rockers WhoMadeWho successfully straddle the boundary of indie rock and dance music, like Matthew Dear on amphetamines. Coming off a lengthy tour, the trio retreated into separate rooms of a semi-built hotel near the harbour of their hometown of Copenhagen to record this new material. The result is packed with catchy synth hooks and pop vocals contrasted against dance beats and occasional angular phrases, such as the exhilaratingly abrasive sax-like squawks towards the end of "Every Minute Alone." "Musketeer" sounds like Kraftwerk finally letting their hair down, whereas "All That I Am" pays homage to Ultravox. The trio of Tomas Barfod, Tomas Hoffding and Jeppe Kjellberg manage to craft a sound that is equal parts pop, dance and indie rock; it's accessible, but curiously weird. Knee Deep, their first release for Kompakt, is a solid EP of danceable electro-pop that will pique interest in their third full-length, coming later this year.
