Listen carefully in the DJ scene and you might hear hushed chit-chat about a big man from Nashville, TN, named Wick-it the Instigator. After his lights-out set in Shambhala's Fractal Forest, it would be a shame if the producer/DJ didn't rise to the kind of prominence that has his remixes pumped out of pickup trucks and strip bars the world over.
This guy fucking destroys Van Halen's "Jump," need any other excuse to pay attention? Well, how about a heavy-as-all-heck version of Dre's "Still California"? Overplayed? Perhaps. But never played like this mix, all heavy and sludgy.
The thing about Wick-it is he picks the tracks you want to hear, but then he messes with them so much, makes them so damn heavy with massive bass drops, it's almost unbearable. But he also makes you dance uncontrollably, and he never sticks to one style for long, so it's hard to peg him with any dance music subgenre.
In that vein, and in what seemed at first like a Shambs-induced hallucination, Wick-it mashed House of Pain's "Jump Around" (incidentally, one of the fest's most overplayed tracks) with Skrillex's "Reptile." Who knew you could make those two songs mesh up? That alone is worthy of much praise. Put this guy on one of the big, national electronic tours and watch him rise to the top. Wick-it's set at Shambhala equals legendary.
