As Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler spends his year playing basketball and getting mileage out of his DJ Windows 95 moniker, his brother Will Butler is also carving his own path; in his case, this means releasing a solo album. Policy is coming out though Merge Records on March 10, and until then, it will be available to stream in full here on Exclaim.ca.
While Butler's impassioned voice is fairly similar to that of his brother, his songs definitely aren't. Policy is a mixture of no-bones-about-it garage rock ("Take My Side," "What I Want"), synth-spiked new wave ("Anna"), gospel-inflected soul ("Son of God," "Witness") and more, with the instrumentation frequently switching up from song to song.
These aren't arena-filling mega-anthems like the ones Arcade Fire writes. Via the Spotify player below, take a listen to what it sounds like when Butler steps away from his famed group.
