Winnerys

Imagine the Rutles without any of the clever, tongue-in-cheek humour. That, in a mop-topped, jingle-jangle nutshell, is what Spanish quartet the Winnerys are all about. Accordingly, it’s difficult to take the band seriously as it runs through tune after tune of tweaked and reworked early Beatles material set to new, English-as-a-second-language lyrics. For what it’s worth, this stuff is extremely well executed, which puts the Winnerys right up there with the kid who consistently ties his shoelaces better than anyone else in his entire school. Over the past few years, Rainbow Quartz has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the music world’s foremost stables of melodic, ’60s reverential guitar pop bands. However, cluttering up the roster with two-dimensional novelty acts like the Winnerys and the Singles does a disservice to the label’s more progressive and critically acclaimed units, like Myracle Brah or the Lilys.
