Wintersleep will be hitting some well-worn territory when they return to the club scene to promote their forthcoming full-length, The Great Detachment. Ahead of the album's arrival, they're streaming a wistful and reflective rocker called "Territory," which happens to have Canadian rock legend and Rush bassist Geddy Lee laying down the low-end.
Hardly a fly-by-night operation, Wintersleep's new single hits chunky via a blast of distortion and a steady, thumping four-string presence. Vocalist Paul Murphy brings up ideas of identity, fantasy and escape in the piece, but comes to the personal conclusion: "I don't want to run away."
If you're wanting to know how Lee got onto the Wintersleep single, there's really not much back story. All they did was ask him.
"Geddy's part was perfect because it had this great groove and locked into to the vocal melody in the song from time to time, bringing more weight the melody in important spots," Murphy said in a statement. "It added a certain playful dimension to the equation because it's so dynamic."
Of the experience, Lee reported: "I had a blast laying down a bunch of takes and am happy to support a fellow Canadian band."
