Avant-pop crew Xiu Xiu have been forced to cancel their upcoming North American tour due to health issues surrounding vocalist Jamie Stewart's throat.
The band leader issued a statement today (February 7), explaining that he's faced health problems with his throat for a while now, and a doctor has ordered Stewart to rest his pipes for at least a couple of months, lest he want to damage his vocal chords irreparably.
"I am disappointed and very sorry to say that Xiu Xiu will have to postpone our upcoming tour. I have been having increasing trouble with my throat for years, and this week my doctor advised me not to sing for at least two months or risk losing it permanently," Stewart explained. "Hopefully, as soon as possible, we will be able reschedule these dates. Thank you to our fans for continuing to support us. We love you all and look forward to seeing you all soon."
Xiu Xiu were to kick off a tour in support of their newly released Angel Guts: Red Classroom LP next week, but all of the upcoming shows, including stops in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, have been scrubbed. It's unclear exactly when the outfit plan to get back on the road, but judging by Stewart's comments, it will be no sooner than late spring.
As for Angel Guts: Red Classroom, Exclaim! recently called Xiu Xiu's latest adventurous set "uncomfortable, sickening, sometimes hilarious and always compelling," driven in part by Stewart's "breathless, faux-operatic vocal style." You can read the full review here.
