Prince Edward Island may not be getting the big ticket show citizens of the tiny province were hoping for this summer, but another rather isolated Canadian city will demonstrate the value of soliciting smaller scale native talent. Since its inception in 1979, the Dawson City Music Festival, which takes place in Dawson City, Yukon from July 17 to 20, has scored some of Canada's finest independent musicians, with past performances by the likes of Final Fantasy, Bruce Cockburn, the Constantines, Joel Plaskett, Tuvan throat-singers Chirgilchin and the Barenaked Ladies, to name a few.
2008's lineup impressively includes Basia Bulat, Bell Orchestre, Black Mountain, Hayden, Immaculate Machine, Julie Doiron, Justin Rutledge, the Sadies, Snailhouse and Torngat. If you're up for the trek, you can get to Dawson City by air, road or river. A weekend pass will run $100 + GST or if you just want to catch the Fest's special 30th Birthday performance by Hayden, it's just $25 bones, tax included.
The full performance schedule and additional info can be found at www.dcmf.com.
