Zeus

Island Stage Guelph, ON July 28

Zeus drew a surprisingly huge crowd at the Island Stage on Saturday night, turning the show into a suitably larger-than-life affair. The four-piece seem to get better with every performance, effortlessly revolving around the stage to switch up who gets to play frontman. Flipping the relaxed vibe of their afternoon workshop, Zeus's evening set was one of the most energetic of the weekend, pounding out arena rock-tinged tracks from the recent Busting Visions LP like set closer "Are You Gonna Waste My Time?" though the setlist was filled in with plenty of old favourites like "The River by the Garden" and "Marching Through Your Head" from debut album Say Us. With the crowd -- including a pair of bloody plastic arms -- clapping along ecstatically throughout most of the set, it's hard to remember that these guys were ever just a backing band for Jason Collett. Rich Aucoin took the stage right after Zeus, projecting the message "ZEUS IS THE GOD OF ROCK GODS" across the tent wall -- and after their Hillside set, he may be right.
