Josh Reichmann Oracle Band

Crazy Power, the debut album from the Josh Reichmann Oracle Band, comes a mere three months after the release of their Life Is Legal EP. On this carefully choreographed album, the former Tangiers front-man and his band refine the eccentricities on display in the EP, channelling a frighteningly diverse array of influences into a brassy mélange of drugged-up funk, roots, post-punk and psychedelia. It's a vividly imaginative record, dense and dizzying, bursting with colour and vibrancy. "Trade Names" is a hooky, glam-addled breeze through Haight-Ashbury with a Tropicália flourish. The subdued piano of "Time Chimes" is brought to life by horn and flute accents that swell into a glorious, wheezing conclusion. The record loses its momentum ever so slightly towards its end but this is a minor quibble. Reichmann and company have every reason to hold their heads high after this.
