After a lot of cowboy-hatted hinting, in December, boygenius's Julien Baker & TORRES released "Sugar in the Tank" — their debut country collaboration. Now, they've shared the details of a full album together, previewed today by the new single "Sylvia."
Send a Prayer My Way arrives April 18 through Matador Records. Back in January 2016, the two musicians played a show together at Chicago's Lincoln Hall. Afterward, one suggested to the other, "We should make a country album." Who knows how serious the suggestion was or how it was received in that moment, but they did, in fact, make it happen.
The aching new single "Sylvia" is named after TORRES's dog. "The morning I went to pick up Sylvia from an upstate shelter, I was at home making my coffee and I turned on WFMU and Dolly Parton's 'Cracker Jack' was on," recalled the singer-songwriter born Mackenzie Scott. "I burst into tears — it felt like the universe was telling me she was going to be mine (Sylvia was only meant to be a foster)."
She continued, "I remember thinking that I'd love to write a song like that, a song that people could feel in their chest within five seconds of turning on the radio, because anyone who has ever had the honour of sharing a home with a beloved pet knows that a pet is family — they're the best friends you could ever have."
