We've been hearing rumours behind a Kurt Cobain solo collection for a while now, but now it's finally set for release, along with the home release of Brett Morgen's Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck documentary. The celebrated film is due out on DVD, Blu-ray and digitally on November 13 through UMe. On that same day, we'll also see the release of its soundtrack, Kurt Cobain - Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings.
The album will arrive in a few different formats, including a 13-track CD, a 31-song deluxe CD and digitally on November 13 via Universal Music Canada. It will then later arrive as two-LP edition on December 4.
On November 13, there's also what's called Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck Super Deluxe Edition, which packages the documentary on DVD and Blu-ray with the 31-track-CD and a cassette configuration of the soundtrack. Along with 48 minutes of bonus interviews not included in the film, the set comes with a 160-page hardbound book featuring rare photographs and interviews, a puzzle, a movie poster, postcards and more.
Though the full tracklisting of the soundtrack has yet to be revealed in full, the record is said to be culled from "Cobain's personal cassettes." Montage of Heck director Brett Morgen had previously explained that these recordings are often just of Cobain and his guitar, and run the gamut "from thrash to ragtime and everything in between."
Morgen had also hinted at the collection featuring comedy sketches. He noted of all of the recordings: "You really get a sense of how happy he was simply by creating himself. His lyrics are really playful, and, at times, you can feel his smile and warmth coming through."
As previously reported, a two-song 7-inch release is also on the horizon. Due November 20, the vinyl single will house Cobain's cover of the Beatles' "And I Love Her" on the A-side and feature a version of Nirvana track "Sappy" on the flip. It's now been confirmed that the latter is an early demo. Nirvana would later issue a full-band version of the track on 1993's No Alternative compilation.
