M. Ward

With its multiple layers, Post-War stands as one of M. Ward’s most lush recordings. Recorded in an attic in Portland, the disc veers from the sparseness of his last record and presents numerous textures here, enhanced by his touring band and guests such as Neko Case and Jim James from My Morning Jacket. On a handful of songs, Ward juxtaposes his world-weary voice with light-hearted lyrics and the combination works well. He also includes a galloping version of Daniel Johnston’s "To Go Home” that races expertly out of the gates. While the newfound elaborate arrangements enhance many of the songs, Ward’s voice still remains the centrepiece with its soothing tones. Featuring both sombre and uplifting sentiments, Post-War adds another impressive album to M. Ward’s catalogue.
