Launching her artistic career as one half of The Swell Season, Czech singer-songwriter Markéta Irglová rose to prominence through the duo's success. Her involvement was detailed in the Academy Award-winning film Once, for which she composed much of the music. These days she calls Iceland home, continuing to write and release solo material in Reykjavik.
We met up with Irglová at The Mod Club a few weeks ago for a solo rendition of "If You Want Me," taken from The Swell Season's soundtrack to the aforementioned film.
Irglová's smooth vocals glide effortlessly over her melancholic minor chord changes, providing an excellent fit for her introspective, downcast lyrics of love. Playing alongside a backup vocalist who also provides percussive support with a hand drum, Irglová succeeds in making a solo performance sound larger and feel more emotive than it could have been.
