Montreal's Thanya Iyer Details New Album 'rest,' Shares Lead Single

The follow-up to 2020's 'KIND' is due next month

Montreal-based singer-songwriter Thanya Iyer returns today with the news of her third album, sharing its lead single "leave the room and face the waves" alongside an accompanying video.

rest is set for release on August 24 via Top Shelf. It follows the New Faves alum's Polaris long-listed 2020 effort KIND, which was one of Exclaim!'s 25 Canadian Albums You Might Have Missed that year.

While KIND was borne of years of touring and developing a flourishing community and an ethics of care, the artist's new album is much more insular (for inevitable, global pandemic-induced reasons).

"rest is in many ways a reflection of myself, asking the question, 'Who am I when it all stops?'" Iyer explained in a statement.

Left to her own devices in quarantine, she critically examined her relationship with rest, beginning an intentional pursuit of it. Songwriting eventually became part of the practice, with the resultant five-song collection graciously moving through jazz inflections and orchestral experimentation.

"leave the room and face the waves" sees Iyer exploring the vulnerability of leaving your comfort zone over a bedrock of playful, muted percussion and a trio of woodwinds. The siren song of it all is the artist's inviting, gentle lilt and cooing harmonies.
