Always a dude to do things his way, Helmet's Page Hamilton is celebrating 20 years of the band's intense, groove-laden urban metal with something unique. This month, the front-man will unveil Close to Home, a series of 200 contemporary art pieces honouring his band's history. The pieces combine handwritten lyrics, graphics and paint into one series.
And while art exhibits and metal generally haven't exactly gone hand-in-hand over the years, when the art is centred around the history of a band as ass-kickin' as Helmet, count us in.
Although details on the project are sparse, the Legacy of Helmet website says this:
"To mark the 20-year anniversary of Helmet, lead singer/guitarist Page Hamilton has constructed a highly personalized project of contemporary art for believers worldwide. Close to Home is an unprecedented venture into the fine art world for the band, combining handwritten lyrics, graphic art and paint into one massive canvas series consisting of 200 drafts only. Set for release on Halloween 2009, Hamilton will be revealing various aspects of the canvas series throughout the month of October."
