Every Radiohead album is now available to stream on YouTube after the band did a mass upload to the platform yesterday (December 18).
Radiohead's uploads come days after Billboard announced that it will begin leveraging YouTube streams into chart configuration. Meaning that Radiohead — a band who at one time adamantly opposed to Spotify — may soon see an increase in streams via YouTube and therefore increased chart status.
This move by Billboard will come into effect starting January 3, with changes in chart configuration starting on January 18. In addition to streams from YouTube, Billboard will now factor in plays of licensed content on Apple, Spotify, Tidal and Vevo.
YouTube's global head of music Lyor Cohen explains the impact this change will have on different genres:
Genres like Latin, hip-hop and electronic, which consistently dominate the YouTube charts, will now be properly recognized for their popularity. This is another great step in bringing YouTube and the industry together and we're so grateful to Billboard and the music business at large for making this addition.
Senior vice-president of charts and data development at Billboard Silvio Pietroluongo elaborates:
With video representing an increasingly large proportion of music consumption on some of the world's largest platforms, the inclusion of YouTube and video overall to the Billboard 200 as well as other genre rankings is the next natural advancement for our album charts.
