Talib Kweli

Live At The Shrine

BY Kevin JonesPublished Nov 21, 2008

One thing you can almost always count one when watching concert DVDs is that you’ll be left feeling a lack of total satisfaction as you long for the rush of actually being at the venue. Strip away the instrumental turns of a live band and you start to understand why rap DVDs are amongst the least interesting of the medium. Talib Kweli tries his best to keep things entertaining in the presentation of his 2008 show at the Shrine in L.A., crafting a tight set list of classics and offering up a few bonus interviews. Priceless gems from his early solo discs take you down memory lane and guest turns by KRS-One and Strong Arm Steady help mix things up a bit. A noticeably subdued crowd and the absence of anything truly memorable in the performances, however, undo those good vibes, landing this video squarely in rental territory.
